She will be missed.
On Tuesday, my friend Lynda passed away. She'd fought a valiant fight with cancer for 3 years.
We all knew how ill she was. But the loss was still a shock when it came. After 3 hard years, it still was a surprise.
I'd been organizing some pictures of my prior years at Virtuoso travel week when we went virtual this Ausut. So, I had a lot of pictures of Lynda at my fingertips when the news broke. In ways we all seem to grieve in the days of CoVid, I posted the pictures I had as a way of processing the news. Others started to as well. Within moments, it seemed, I was contacted by a travel industry publication to give a quote. How can you summarize someone's life and impact within an hour or so of
hearing of their passing. I wanted to honour Lynda, and try to come up with some words, and sent through something - which were captured here
“Lynda welcomed me to the world of travel and helped me transition from my former career as an actuary,” Gallant-Halloran wrote PAX in an email. “She was passionate about the industry, and taught me its power to connect people around the globe. She maximized her ‘return on life’ through travel, and always thought this exuberant adventure was better savoured with a glass of champagne. I will miss her.”
But, like all loss, all who knew her will still be processing her not being there long after the publications and attention turns.
May we all learn to embrace life with the vitality and indomitable spirit she showed.

This is an Era, not an Event
|
|
What a terrific panel by Canadian Geographic Travel’s
Canada I'd attended this week.
As usual, the indomitable Zita Cobb, inn-keeper at Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, knocked it out of the park.
I’m hoping Andrew will post the video link because Zita dropped two minutes of solid gold at the beginning (besides sparkling gems throughout) when she was asked to give advice to the travel industry and planners, given the concern that exists about safety.
Zita said, “Any of us can only gain confidence by getting out there. It’s by doing. And the longer we stay under the bed, the more fearful we become.”
"Most people now understand that this is an era, not an event.”
“... it’s tough putting your foot in what you thought was cold water but actually travellers and planners need to understand that the people running these businesses whether airlines or off the coast of Newfoundland... we are people too, and we have fears too. And the last thing any one of us want to do is to put someone at risk... We care about people, that’s why we’re in this industry in first place. And secondly, we are not going to do something to injure our business.
Because the thing about the travel industry, as we humans navigate this pandemic, we have to do it together. This can only be solved in a co-ordinated way. And our industry is the one that can, and should, lead because by definition, travel is about communities. And if there is anything any of us have learned in staying home for the last five months is that we have a new relationship with local. We’re born to travel. We’re wired this way.
And I think travel in our own country is
a.) safe,
b.) responsible, and
c.) can make a difference in strengthening our country.”
Wow!
She went on to differentiate "sustainable travel" (which I love) as "don't make a mess".... whereas "re-generative travel" is "make better than they were by actions taken in running your business."
Amazing.
So, where would you like to travel in your own country?

Dashing through the Danube - Zoom Reunion
|
|
Have you ever set out on a trip with a bunch of strangers, and just connected so you returned home with a new group of friends?
I have.
Part of the joy in my work is putting together small groups to travel together.
Last December (before the world stopped moving), I hosted a group of 70 ladies to go Dashing through the Danube with @shepherdsfashions and @kathie_donovan . We travelled from Budapest to Regensburg with @u_rivercruises , and ventured on to Prague. It was a wonderful adventure together.
Yesterday, I hosted a zoom reunion call with this group. It was a great opportunity to reconnect, check in how everyone was doing during this global pandemic, and discover how we all have learned to pivot our businesses and our lives. We also reminisced about our wonderful Christmas markets experience. The connections are still there, and strengthened by the memories of our time together.
While this virus thing has interfered with out plans to travel in early 2021, we are planning another trip in 2022. Can’t wait!
Wanna join us on next venture? Let me know you're interested!

Sheila was a wonderful agent, she looked after all our concerns in a quick and responsive manner. She took lots of photos and shared them with the group. She was calm under pressure and took part in all the activities, she seemed to truly enjoy herself and the participants on this cruise. I believe Sheila was one of the main reasons this cruise was so successful. I use Sheila expertise to help me with most of my personal travel
plans, and have for years.
Travel end date: 13 Dec 2019
