It's time to celebrate Mother Earth!
Happy Mother's Day to you and yours. And Happy Mother's Day to Mother Earth!
I'm very proud of my daughter, Ceili Halloran, who chose to do her grade 9 science project on sustainability to focus exclusively on "Sustainable Tourism".
Have a look at what Ceili did! I'm sure you'll agree she did an excellent job with all her own research, voiceovers, video editing, etc for an 8 minute documentary project for her school, Elmwood.
Many thanks to Ashish Sanghrajka for his kind assistance to Ceili, in giving a zoom interview, and sharing his passion and photos of Big Five Tours & Expeditions' water filtration project in Guatemala. (This isn't the first time Ashish and Ceili have partnered up. Ashish came to Elmwood to talk to Ceili’s grade 4 class. And Ceili has served on Ashish’s “Precious Journeys” board of directors to help design itineraries for kids.)
Since she's now presented to her class, I have Ceili's permission to share on social media and in my newsletter.
So on this Mother's Day, as we think about where we came from and the impact we will leave on the world, let's also spare a moment for Mother Earth.
Let's make sure when we travel again, we have a Conscious Comeback! Travel sustainably. Make the spots you visit better because you choose to travel. Make a difference.

25 Travelers on Why They Love Their Virtuoso Advisor
|
|
Travel Advisor Day was this week
And my Virtuoso travel network did a special piece on 25 Travelers - Why they Love their Virtuoso Advisor.
I was thrilled they included my client, Anne Toal, in the 25 clients profiled from across the global travel network.
From peace of mind and insider knowledge to (so many) perks, travelers share why their relationship with a Virtuoso advisor has made their vacations better.
One of the most common misconceptions about travel advisors is that they’re just transactional agents – you tell them where you want to go, they book your flights, and off you go. And while they’re definitely logistics pros, there’s so much more that encompasses what it means to work with a travel advisor. From that first spark of an idea until long after a trip is finished, travel advisors are by your side. They’re collaborators, curators, and confidantes, doing everything from building custom itineraries to calling their hotelier friends in Paris to get you the suite with the very best view of the Eiffel Tower.....
“We give our advisor a list of places we want to get to. From there, she starts sending ideas, articles, and side trips we might not know about. She picks up on our interests and then fills in the blanks with her expertise.” – Anne Toal

Natural wonders and great golf greens keep Anne Toal and Paul Brisson on the go.
After a canceled flight on their honeymoon in Greece 32 years ago, Anne Toal and Paul Brisson of Ontario, Canada, were stranded in Corfu and missed boarding their cruise in Athens. They scrambled to change plans and meet up with it in Crete. Their ship eventually came in, Anne explains, but it reinforced with these practical- minded travelers –
they both spent their careers as actuaries – the need to avert misadventure by planning with an experienced and reputable travel advisor. Both now 61 and retired, they explore prodigiously, with nary a hiccup, thanks to Virtuoso advisor Sheila Gallant-Halloran.
(And thanks to Anne for sharing the below link with me for this newsletter - 20 Good News Stories You May have Missed!)

UN World Migratory Bird Day is a day to recognize the incredible journeys of migrating birds, and how they connect conservation efforts across the globe.
DID YOU KNOW? In 1917, Canada passed The Migratory Bird Convention Act (MBCA) making it illegal to harm, collect or harass most adult bird species, their nests and eggs. This Act was signed in the Rotunda of the museum, where Parliament was sitting at the time!
Do you have nesting boxes or bird houses in your neighborhood? What about trees to provide shelter for migrating birds? What birds can you hear when you step outside today, and look to the sky?

My Virtuoso Profile - "A Travel Advisor on Why Sustainable Tourism Matters"
|
|
Expert insight on how to travel with a purpose.
“Instead of Fly and Flop, my travel mantra is Stop and Sop,” says Virtuoso advisor Sheila Gallant-Halloran. “Sop up the culture and experience, immersing yourself wherever you are.”
Gallant-Halloran, a travel advisor for 12 years, has long championed sustainable tourism, and feels strongly that we can have a trip of a lifetime while also making a positive impact on the local communities and places. She often speaks about sustainable tourism practices – most recently, to 70 students at the University of Ottawa with a “Geography of Tourism” course and at an Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City event on “Sense of Place”– and also hosts Twitter chats on the subject. Gallant-Halloran
invited Big Five Tours and Expeditions’ president Ashish Sanghrajka to her daughter’s school to talk about sustainable tourism, and arranged for them both to be interviewed on TV in Ottawa about why it matters.
The United Nations declared 2017 as the Year of Sustainability, in large part due to the increase in the amount of travelers exploring the world: In 1950, there were 25 million tourists around the world. In 2016, there were 1.2 billion. That presents a huge opportunity, but also a threat if not managed well –
education is key.
We talked to Gallant-Halloran about sustainable travel trends, where to go in 2018, and how her clients respond to sustainable tourism.
