Vaxications Return to the Rivers
|
|
We are a double-vaxxed family!
Yesterday, my 15 year old got her second vaccine - so now my family of 4 is now fully vaccinated. Thanks to the Wabano Center for Indigenous Health, we are ready to travel. And I love the tagline #BeGreatVaccinate !

Of course, we know that Vaxications are the new turn of phrase. Merriam Webster tells us that Vaxication—a combination of vaccine and vacation—has increased in use as the COVID-19 vaccine has become more available to the public. And, this weekend, while we're all celebrating Canada Day (albeit muted this year) or July 4th in the US, my friends at AMA Waterways experienced a Return to the Rivers& Yesterday, Rudy and Kristin, the founders of AMA Waterways, sailed on the AMA Douro in Portugal (see photos below)
And Uniworld returned to the rivers with a cruise on Italy's Po River at the end of June. Uniworld returns to Europe's rivers; S.S. La Venezia departs from Venice, Italy

AMA Waterways Returns to the Rivers
|

It has been 544 days since we last sailed in Europe. Today, the long wait is over!
My friends at AMA Waterways and I are overjoyed to have them officially set sail in Portugal yesterday aboard AmaDouro as they welcomed their first guests back to Europe to explore the Douro river.
Here's a picture of the founders, Rudy and Kristin, onboard the ship yesterday.

WHAT'S a "SAILOR'S GRIP?"
River cruising is taking off again - but - like we discussed in last week's newsletter, expedition cruising is going off in all directions too, and sales and bookings are really taking off - Antarctica, Arctic, South Pacific, and more.
You might say that there is a plethora of options to return to sailing on the expedition ships.
Did you know that expedition cruises use zodiacs to get people to even more remote places than the expedition ship can go?
Have you gotten into a zodiac before? If you can climb into a bathtub, you can get into a zodiac, especially with expedition crew helping you. They use a sailor's grip to keep you safe when you board the large motorized rubber boat.
Did you know that the human hand, when wet, is inherently lacking in friction, and the taper of the human fingers means that the familiar "handshake hold" will almost certainly fail to "hold" when under load. A "sailor's grip" involves closing the fingers and thumb around the WRIST of the other person, such that the load is borne by the thickest part of the hand i.e. the place where the thumb attaches to the wrist. "Sailor's grip" is far
less likely to fail in the wet and cold, than the "handshake" grip.
