A moment to honour to two fallen heroes before the regular newsletter.
💔🍁 They came home. Just not the way any of us prayed for. As a proud Canadian and a travel professional,
my heart is breaking. This week, the bodies of Captain Antoine Forest, 30, and First Officer Mackenzie Gunther, 24, were brought home to Canada. Two young men who chose aviation as their calling — and gave everything for it. Antoine trained at the Centre québécois de formation aéronautique at Cégep de Chicoutimi, graduating in 2018. He went on to fly wildfire spotting missions over Quebec's forests — building his hours, chasing his dream. Mackenzie graduated from Seneca Polytechnic's aviation technology program in 2023 and joined Jazz Aviation right after graduation. Two young Canadians. Two
different paths. One shared calling. With just seconds to spare, the first officer transferred control to the captain. Together, they braked with everything they had. A passenger credited their "incredible reflexes" with saving his life. The cockpit was
destroyed. They never had a chance. But because of them — 72 people went home to their families. Antoine's brother Cédric wrote: "Have a good flight, my brother. You'd come and go in a flash, always with new projects in mind. You've left us in a flash again —
too soon for us to say goodbye." Please say their names. Captain Antoine Forest. First Officer Mackenzie Gunther. Rest easy, gentlemen. Canada is proud of you. Canada is grieving you🍁
And now back to the regular weekly Lush Life Travel newsletter.
Sheila onboard Uniworld S.S. Emilie Why River Cruising Is No Longer
One-Size-Fits-All I was honoured to be quoted in PAXNews.com this morning following my second year attending the ASTA – American Society of Travel Advisors River Cruise Expo. But what struck me most wasn’t just the scale of
the event. It was the depth.
Sheila onboard Riverside Debussy sailaway. Last year gave me something incredibly valuable: 👉 “A level of insight you simply can’t get from brochures or webinars.” This year? 👉 “It was about going deeper — strengthening relationships and refining how I match the right river experience to the right client.” And that distinction matters
more than ever.
Sheila inspecting the 3 AMA ships at Expo - Sofia, Venita, and Prima. The river cruise space is evolving quickly. New ships. New brands. New itineraries. And perhaps most importantly—new expectations from clients. We’re seeing growth in: ✨ Wellness-focused travel ✨ Active and immersive itineraries ✨ Culinary-driven experiences ✨ Solo and multigenerational travel But through all of that change, one truth remains: 👉 “While the river is the same, the experience onboard is very different.”
Sheila onboard Riverside Debussy in Heated Rivalry jacket. This is where the role of the travel advisor has fundamentally shifted. It’s no longer about recommending a well-known brand. It’s about discernment. 👉 Understanding the nuances between ships 👉 Knowing what happens behind the scenes 👉 Matching experience to traveller—not just itinerary to dates Because today’s clients aren’t just booking a river cruise. They’re looking for something that reflects how they want to travel.
Sheila with Tony Logan of Virtuoso, Gary Murphy co-owner of AMA, and Catherine Powell CEO of AMA. At this year’s Expo, I toured 16 river cruise
ships. I spent time with senior leadership across: - AmaWaterways
- Uniworld Boutique River Cruises
- Riverside Luxury Cruises
- Tauck
- Avalon Waterways
- Viking
Not just in formal presentations—but in real, unscripted conversations. That level of access matters. Because it’s what allows me to say: 👉 “It’s the combination of product immersion, real access, and lived experience that allows me to guide clients effectively — not just toward a cruise, but toward the right cruise.”
Sheila with Torstein Hagen, Owner and Founder of Viking. And here’s where it becomes even more important. River cruising is becoming increasingly personalized. 👉 “The industry is moving toward helping clients travel their way.” Which also means: 👉 “Just because you recognize a brand name doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for
you.”
Sheila with Pam Hoffee, CEO of Avalon Waterways, and her teammate Vanessa Parrish. That’s my role. To filter the noise. To understand the details. To match you with the experience that aligns with your version of luxury, your pace, your interests, your expectations. Because the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one? It’s in the details.
👉 I’ll share the article, along with a few moments from onboard, in the comments. 🌍 This Week’s 4 Travel CornersEach week, we bring you insights from four inspiring corners of the travel world—designed to spark ideas, fuel your wanderlust, and keep you in the loop on what’s possible next: River Cruise Corner – Explore the best of river cruising with itinerary highlights, ship spotlights, and insider tips. Adventure Travel Corner
– From safaris to polar expeditions, get inspired by journeys that push the boundaries of exploration. Wellness Travel Corner – Discover retreats, resorts, and experiences that help you relax, recharge, and reconnect. Come Travel With Me Corner – Join one of my upcoming hosted group trips and experience the world with fellow curious, like-minded travelers—crafted and guided by me. Where will your next
corner of the world be? Let’s find out together.
1. River Cruise Corner — You’re Comparing River Cruises Wrong Most people choose a river cruise based on itinerary or price. But the real difference? 👉 It’s what’s happening behind the scenes 👉 And the details you only understand when you’ve actually been onboard
Now that I’m back from Amsterdam and the ASTA – American Society of Travel Advisors River Cruise Expo, I’ve been going through some
of the “gold” I captured on my phone—and there are two moments that perfectly illustrate this.
Let’s start in the galley. Onboard Riverside Debussy, I toured the kitchen with Executive Chef Simeon Petkov—20 years cooking on Europe’s rivers. And this is what
most people never see: ✔️ 110 guests onboard ✔️ A kitchen nearly twice the size of ships carrying ~190 guests ✔️ Almost double the crew That changes everything. This isn’t volume production. There’s no line of pre-plated
meals waiting to go out. This is: ✨ Fresher ingredients ✨ Made-to-order dining ✨ Precision and attention to detail And then you experience it firsthand…
An exclusive lunch in the Vintage Room 🍷✨ 🥂 Champagne to start 🦞 Lobster with mango & lemon hollandaise 🥩 Braised ox cheek 🦌 Venison filet with dark chocolate jus 🥥 Key lime pie with passionfruit sorbet Each course paired beautifully with wine. Honestly? 👉 It rivals some of the best restaurants on land.
Now let’s move to something completely different—but just as important: 👉 Your cabin experience
While I was in Amsterdam at the ASTA River Cruise Expo—touring 16 river cruise ships—one that truly stood out was Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ S.S. Emilie. Inspired by
Emilie Flöge—artist, designer, and Gustav Klimt’s life partner—you feel the artistic influence the moment you step onboard. The design, the textures, the atmosphere… it’s immersive in a completely different way. I stayed in a Deluxe French Balcony stateroom, and this is where expectations vs. reality really matter.
Uniworld calls it a French balcony—but it’s not the traditional floor-to-ceiling doors many travellers picture, and it’s not a step-out balcony. Instead, it’s a panoramic window where
the top portion opens, giving you light and fresh air. What stood out to me? At 5’4”, I could sit comfortably with my morning coffee and still see the river. On many ships, the window partition hits right at eye level—so you’re constantly standing just to
enjoy the view. It’s a small design detail. But it completely changes how you experience your cabin.
And this is exactly the point. There are many river cruise lines with excellent
products—Uniworld, Riverside, and others all deliver beautiful experiences. But they are not the same. 👉 The river may be the same 👉 The itinerary may look similar But the onboard experience is very different Once you understand that… you stop comparing river cruises the same way.
🇨🇦 And then there are the moments you can’t quantify. Sailing through the Rhine Gorge on a crisp March morning— castles on hillsides, vineyards waking up for spring… Wearing my 🇨🇦
Heated Rivalry jacket, representing Canada halfway across the world… That quiet magic you only get on the river.
This is why I invest the time—and yes, over $10,000—to attend events like ASTA and tour ships in person. Because when clients ask: 👉 “What’s the difference, really?” These are the answers that matter.

2. Adventure Travel - The Quest to See Emperor Penguins in Antarctica
If Antarctica is already on your list… let me take it one step further. What if you didn’t just visit Antarctica— but experienced one of the rarest wildlife encounters on
Earth? I’m talking about standing on the ice in the Weddell Sea, watching Emperor penguins and their chicks in one of the most remote places on the planet. This is not a typical Antarctica trip. This is expedition travel at its absolute edge.
🐧 Why the Weddell Sea Changes EverythingMost Antarctica itineraries explore the Antarctic Peninsula. But the Weddell Sea? It’s colder. More
remote. And home to the legendary Emperor penguin colony near Snow Hill Island. Unlike other penguins, Emperor penguins live and breed on sea ice—which means reaching them is incredibly complex. And never guaranteed. 👉 This is not about
ticking a box. 👉 This is about pursuing something extraordinary.
🚁🚢 Two Very Different Ways to Get ThereThis is where most people get it wrong. Not all Antarctica expeditions are designed the same—and if Emperor penguins are your goal, how you go matters more than where you go. 🚁 Helicopter Access
(Quark Expeditions)Designed specifically to maximize your chances: ✔️ Multiple days in the Snow Hill region ✔️ Helicopter transfers when ships can’t get close ✔️ Several flight attempts built into the itinerary 👉 Currently one of the strongest approaches
for 2026
🚢 Icebreaker Access (Ponant – Le Commandant Charcot)A completely different level of expedition: ✔️ A true luxury icebreaker capable of pushing deep into pack ice ✔️ Guided walks across the ice (often ~3 km, carefully mapped for safety) ✔️ Potential for
extended time in the area if conditions allow 👉 A standout option looking ahead to 2027 and beyond
❄️ The Reality No One Talks AboutThis is one of the hardest wildlife encounters on Earth. Conditions shift constantly: Ice moves Weather delays flights Access routes change daily Some ships don’t make it at all 👉 The takeaway: There are no
guarantees—only better-designed expeditions
⚠️ Not All Antarctica Cruises Are EqualMany itineraries mention Emperor penguins. Very few are actually built to reach them. 👉 If this is your dream, the operator and expedition design matter more
than anything else
🎯 My PerspectiveThis is one of those trips where experience and strategy make all the difference. It’s not about choosing Antarctica. It’s about choosing the right way to experience it.
❤️ Curious About This Kind of Expedition? If this type of journey is on your radar—even as a “someday”… I’m currently putting together a deeper guide on how to plan an Emperor penguin expedition properly, and what to consider before committing. In the meantime, I’m always happy to share insights and help you understand what’s possible.
Because this isn’t just a trip. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime pursuit of something truly rare. ❤️
3. Wellness Corner - A Life That Matters In 2011, in Las Vegas of all places, I had one of those unexpected, unforgettable moments. At my very first Virtuoso Travel Week—at one of my very first receptions—I met Biruté Galdikas. At the time, I knew I was meeting someone important. But I didn’t fully grasp just how extraordinary she was. Today, as we reflect on her passing, I find myself returning to that moment with a deeper awareness. Because here’s what strikes me even more now: 👉 I travelled to Las Vegas… and met a Canadian who had dedicated her life to the rainforests of Borneo. That contrast stays with
me.
She wasn’t just a scientist. She was one of the legendary “Trimates,” alongside Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey—women who reshaped how we understand our closest living relatives. For nearly 55 years in Borneo, she didn’t just study orangutans—she lived alongside them. Because of her work: ✨ We understand orangutan behaviour, diet, and ecology ✨ We know about their long birth intervals ✨ Conservation and rehabilitation efforts
became possible at scale But what stayed with me wasn’t just her credentials. It was her presence. There was a quiet
intensity. A deep conviction. A sense that she wasn’t separate from the natural world—she was part of it.
And this week, I’ve been thinking about something else. About what it means to live a life that matters. 💔 As Canadians, we’ve also been grieving the loss of
Captain Antoine Forest and First Officer Mackenzie Gunther—two young men who gave everything in a moment that saved others. (See intro to this week's newsletter above.) Different paths. Different lives. But the same truth: 👉 A life of purpose leaves an imprint far beyond its years 👉 A life of service is felt by
others long after it’s gone
In travel—especially in expedition travel—we often talk about destinations. But the most meaningful journeys? They’re not just about where you go. They’re about who you learn from… And how those moments change you. That encounter in Las Vegas—meeting Dr. Biruté Galdikas, a Canadian who had dedicated her life to Borneo—feels very different to me today. Less like coincidence. More like a moment I was lucky enough to witness. And a quiet reminder. To live with intention. To stay connected to the world around us. To make it better, in whatever way we can. Because in the end, wellness isn’t just about slowing down or escaping. It’s about alignment. 👉 Living a life that means something 👉 Leaving the world better than you found it 👉 Being remembered not
just for what you did—but for what you gave ❤️ Return on life, always.

5. Sheila
Spotlight: From Rivers to Parliament Hill Back from Europe—and straight into a different kind of immersion here in Ottawa. From walking 16 river cruise ships in Amsterdam… to sitting at the table with some of the most influential voices
shaping the future of travel in Canada.
It started with the ACTA – Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Travel Advisors roundtables at the Westin Ottawa. And what a room to be in. Conversations with industry leaders
across expedition, small ship ocean, and luxury travel: ✨ Cara Matthew — Lindblad Expeditions ✨ Nathan Bowler — Adventure Canada ✨ Stephanie Roles — Aurora Expeditions ✨ Andrea Mendelsohn — Windstar Cruises ✨ Patricia Di Benedetto — Explora Journeys ✨ Carolina Suarez — Silversea Cruises ✨ Joshua Knox — Avalon Waterways ✨ Anup Mistry — G Adventures ✨ Brian Robertson — Direct Travel Canada ✨ Fiona
Bowen — ACTA …and many more.
This is the part of my work most people don’t see—but it matters. One week, I’m onboard ships—testing cabins, comparing dining, understanding flow and experience. The next? I’m here. 👉 Talking about where expedition travel is going next 👉 Understanding how small ship ocean cruising is evolving 👉 Connecting directly with the people shaping these experiences Because staying at the top of this industry isn’t accidental. It’s
intentional.
And the conversations didn’t stop there. After the roundtables, I was invited to both the TICO reception and the ACTA Parliamentary Reception—part of ACTA’s first Parliamentary Hill Day. This is where things shifted from industry… to impact. 👉 Travel is trade. That message came through clearly in conversations with federal decision-makers and industry leadership. What stood out most wasn’t just who was in the room—but the
level of access and substance behind every discussion. ✨ Time with Richard Smart, CEO of TICO, on how regulation is evolving alongside our industry ✨ Insight into leadership transitions shaping TICO’s future ✨ Conversations with Tony Baldinelli, Shadow Minister for Tourism ✨ Discussions with Ernie Klassen, representing a tourism-driven coastal community Alongside tourism boards, diplomatic representatives, and industry leaders at every level.
These weren’t surface-level conversations. They focused on real priorities shaping the future of travel in Canada: ✔️ National alignment on licensing and consumer protection ✔️ Supporting advisors
through shifting global demand ✔️ Improving digital access for small and Indigenous tourism businesses ✔️ Streamlining trusted traveller programs ✔️ Protecting the economics of travel for clients
This is the part of the industry most people never see. The rooms where policy meets practice. Where frontline
experience shapes national conversation. Where the future of how we travel—and how I serve my clients—is being discussed in real time.
From river ships in Europe… To roundtables in Ottawa… To Parliament Hill… It’s all connected. Because delivering a true
return on life experience doesn’t just happen on a ship. It’s shaped in rooms like these— where access, advocacy, and expertise come together.
