2. Adventure Travel - Tulips, History & Spring Adventure: From Ottawa to the Netherlands

Every spring, Ottawa bursts into colour.

More than a million tulips bloom across the city. Pathways fill with visitors. Cameras come out. Winter feels officially over.

Soon, the Canadian Tulip Festival will welcome locals and visitors once again to Commissioners Park at Dow’s Lake for one of the capital’s most beloved traditions.

But what many people don’t realize is this:

Ottawa’s tulips are not just beautiful. They are a living symbol of gratitude, resilience, and international friendship.

And for travelers, they can also be the spark for your next great adventure.

The Extraordinary Story Behind Ottawa’s Tulips

The story begins during the Second World War.

In 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands. The Dutch royal family fled Europe for safety. Princess Juliana of the Netherlands came to Ottawa with her young daughters and lived quietly among Canadians.

Then came a remarkable challenge.

Princess Juliana was expecting another child, and under Dutch succession rules, a royal born on foreign soil could create complications in the line of succession.

Canada responded with an elegant legal solution.

A section of the maternity ward at Ottawa Civic Hospital was temporarily declared extraterritorial for the birth — ensuring the child would be born solely Dutch.

On January 19, 1943, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands was born in Ottawa — the only royal ever born in North America.

After the war, Canadian troops helped liberate the Netherlands and deliver desperately needed food aid.

The Dutch never forgot.

In 1945, tulip bulbs were sent to Ottawa as a thank you. Then more. Then more again.
