Norway: Where Nature Still Feels Wild ❤️!

There are some places in the world that simply feel different the moment you arrive.

Norway is one of them.

Towering fjords carved by glaciers. Tiny red-roofed fishing villages hugging dramatic coastlines. Waterfalls cascading down mountainsides. Viking history. Midnight sun in summer. Northern Lights in winter. Quiet moments that make you stop talking and simply stare out the window.

It’s no surprise Norway has captured the imagination of travellers around the world — and yes, even inspired Disney’s Frozen. The landscapes truly do feel cinematic. But Norway is far more than a movie backdrop. It’s one of the most beautiful and emotionally grounding destinations I’ve ever experienced.

From the UNESCO-listed fjords to the iconic stave churches that seem pulled from another century, Norway offers something rare in modern travel: space to breathe. These remarkable medieval wooden churches — with their dark timber construction, dragon-head carvings, and Viking-era influences — feel almost mystical against the dramatic mountain scenery.

And then there are the fjords themselves.

Geirangerfjord. Nærøyfjord. Sognefjord. Hardangerfjord.

The names alone evoke adventure.

You can stand atop dramatic viewpoints like Trolltunga or Pulpit Rock, ride the breathtaking Flåm Railway through steep mountain valleys, wander colourful Bergen with its UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, or sail quietly past waterfalls that tumble hundreds of feet into impossibly still water below.

One of the best ways to experience Norway is by sea.

The coastline itself is part of the story — thousands of kilometres of dramatic scenery, remote communities, tiny harbours, and landscapes that constantly shift from rugged to impossibly serene.

1. River Cruise Corner  — When “Bike & Barge” Goes Wrong… and When It Gets It Very Right

I’ll be honest—“bike and barge” hasn’t always been a glowing recommendation from me.

I’ve had clients come back from trips in France with stories that were… memorable, but not in the way you want:

• Bathrooms where the toilet and shower were basically the same space
• Bunk beds so tight you could touch both walls at once—and hit your head getting in
• Food so underwhelming they ended up shopping for eggs, baguettes, butter, and cheese themselves (in France!)

So when someone tells me, “I don’t mind roughing it,” I usually pause.

Because on the rivers and canals, “roughing it” can get very rough, very quickly.

❤️ But Then… I Revisited the Idea

After meeting with Belmond and learning more about Les Bateaux Belmond, I’ll say this:

This is not the same category. Not even close.

Calling these “barges” almost feels misleading.

These are floating boutique hotels—intimate, private, and deeply personalized experiences that just happen to move through the French countryside.

🥂 What Luxury Bike & Barge Actually Looks Like

With Les Bateaux Belmond, the entire experience is reimagined:

6 nights / 7 days of luxury accommodation with complete privacy and exclusivity. These are small boats for private hire with normally 4-6 guests onboard, some accommodate 8 guests, and one ship has 12 guests.

I still won’t recommend most bike-and-barge trips.
