Slipping Into the Long Weekend Like a Penguin 🐧🍸✈️
This week, somewhere in Antarctica, I remembered watching a penguin make a very relatable life decision. At first, he was upright and respectable — carefully following the penguin highway like a
responsible citizen. Then suddenly, halfway across the snow: “To heck with this.” Down onto his belly he went,
launching himself forward in full toboggan mode across the Antarctic landscape. Honestly? That may be the most accurate representation of Victoria Day weekend energy I’ve ever seen. 🇨🇦❤️ And maybe that’s why travel matters so much. Because sometimes life isn’t about powering through. Sometimes it’s about letting go a little. - Laughing
more.
- Savouring the moment.
- Taking the scenic route.
- Ordering the cocktail.
- Watching the sunset.
- Sliding into adventure instead of overthinking it.
Which brings me to another important occasion this week: 🌍🍸 World Cocktail Day.
One of my favourite parts of travel has always been discovering a destination through its flavours, cafés, rooftop bars, hidden speakeasies, vineyards, local traditions, and tiny unforgettable moments. Sometimes an entire destination becomes tied to a single drink and the feeling surrounding it. - An Espresso Martini in Rome.
- A Singapore Sling beneath the city lights.
- A Mojito in Havana with live music drifting through the streets.
- A Mai Tai at sunset in Hawaii.
- An Aperol Spritz along the Amalfi Coast while watching boats drift across the Mediterranean.
Travel isn’t just about seeing the world. It’s about tasting it. Feeling it. Experiencing it. It’s the sound of ice cracking in Antarctica while penguins wander past completely unbothered by
humans. It’s sipping wine while castles glide past your river cruise balcony in Europe. It’s the laughter around a table in Lisbon. The jazz bar in New Orleans you accidentally discover at midnight. The tiny café in Vienna where time seems to stop. And perhaps most importantly — it’s the stories you bring home afterward. As we enjoy the Victoria Day
long weekend here in Canada, I hope you find your own version of that feeling. Maybe it’s a backyard cocktail. Maybe it’s time at the cottage. Maybe it’s planning your next great adventure. Or maybe it’s finally deciding that “someday” trip deserves to become a real one. Whether your perfect escape is Antarctica, Europe, a luxury river cruise, a safari, a wellness retreat, or somewhere completely unexpected… Don’t just taste the world. Go experience it. ❤️ —

1. River Cruise Corner — Why Uniworld Feels Different ❤️🚢
One of the highlights of attending the River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam this March was sitting down with Michelle Palma, Executive Vice President of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, to talk about what truly makes Uniworld different. And honestly? You feel it almost immediately when you step onboard. From the moment you enter, Uniworld ships feel less like traditional cruise ships and more like floating boutique hotels — filled with rich textures, curated art, beautiful design, exceptional cuisine, and highly personalized service. But what I appreciated most during our conversation was how intentional the experience is. Everything feels thoughtfully designed: ✨ the atmosphere ✨ the dining ✨ the destinations ✨ the
pace ✨ the sense of immersion It’s a style of river cruising that feels elegant, experiential, and deeply connected to place. And this is exactly why I continue investing in attending events
like the River Cruise Expo in Europe — touring ships firsthand, comparing brands side-by-side, meeting senior executives, and experiencing the nuances that brochures simply can’t explain. Because while the river may be the same… the onboard experience can feel completely different depending on the ship and cruise line you choose. And that’s where expertise matters. This week, that expertise became especially valuable when Uniworld quietly released a very limited 50th Anniversary Sale with up to 50% off select sailings and routes — including something almost unheard of: ✨ September departures on Brilliant Bordeaux.
September is prime Bordeaux season. And these sailings almost never go on sale. In fact, I booked October 11th departures for clients just last week — and that sailing is already completely sold out. Right now, remaining space is extremely limited: 🍷 Possible remaining Classic guarantee cabin on September 6 🍷 A
few Deluxe picture-window cabins on September 13 and September 20 🍷 Most higher cabin categories are completely gone (with perhaps one top suite remaining on one sailing) The September 13 departure currently offers particularly attractive pricing, starting around: ✨ CAD $3,475
per person And there’s another especially interesting opportunity on the September 20th departure: ✨ Solo supplement waived That means: ❤️ Classic cabins are approximately CAD $3,955
per person — whether travelling solo or double occupancy ❤️ Deluxe cabins are approximately CAD $4,725 per person — also available at the same rate for solo travellers or double occupancy For solo travellers considering river cruising, this is a genuinely strong value for Bordeaux in September. And Uniworld’s inclusions are excellent: ❤️ All meals onboard ❤️ Unlimited beverages and alcohol onboard (with some premium exceptions) ❤️ At least one included shore excursion in every port ❤️ Gratuities included ❤️ Beautiful ships with curated dining and highly personalized service Uniworld also offers
optional Masterpiece Collection excursions and special dining experiences for guests looking for even deeper immersion. As an additional Virtuoso amenity, I also have: ✨ €150 per person onboard credit as my gift to you One important note: This promotion requires payment in full at time of booking, and availability is changing quickly. If you’d like me to hold a cabin for you, please let me know right away. We may be able to secure a short courtesy hold (24–48 hours), but I’ll need your passport names and dates of birth
to request it. Here is the itinerary: Brilliant Bordeaux 2026 Itinerary If Bordeaux vineyards, charming French villages, incredible cuisine, and immersive luxury river cruising sound appealing, this is genuinely one of the strongest Bordeaux opportunities I’ve seen for September in quite some time. ❤️

2. Adventure Travel — The Moment Antarctica Becomes Real ❤️🐧❄️
Is there anything more exciting than hearing the captain announce: “You are now entering the Southern Ocean…” …and then
later… “Welcome to the Antarctic Sound.” Because in that moment, it becomes real. Not reading about Antarctica. Not watching documentaries. Not seeing someone else’s photos online. Actually THERE. ❤️ The icebergs begin appearing outside your window. The air feels colder, wilder, quieter. Everyone onboard suddenly stops what they’re doing and stares outside in awe. And honestly? It’s one of the most emotional travel moments I’ve ever experienced. I went to Antarctica expecting: ❄️ glaciers 🐧 penguins 🌊 zodiac excursions weaving through ice And yes — all of that was extraordinary. But what surprised me most was how Antarctica made me feel. Small. Humbled. Grateful. Completely present. Like I had reached the edge of the earth and discovered stillness.
There’s something about Antarctica that strips away noise. No cities. No crowds. No distractions. Just raw nature on a scale so immense it almost feels otherworldly. The penguins walk around like they completely own the place. And honestly? They do. 😂❤️ One moment you’re watching massive glaciers calve into the
sea. The next you’re quietly sitting in a zodiac surrounded by floating ice in complete silence except for distant seabirds and cracking ice. It’s wild. Remote. Beautiful. Humbling. And once you experience it, it stays with you forever. That’s also why expedition cruising feels so different from traditional travel. It isn’t simply about luxury or checking a destination off a list. It’s about immersion. Discovery. Perspective. Transformation. You return home with incredible photos, yes — but also with a renewed appreciation
for the planet itself. And after helping clients choose between expedition companies like Lindblad Expeditions, HX, Quark, Ponant, and others, I can honestly say: the ship, expedition team, guiding philosophy, and onboard atmosphere matter enormously. Because Antarctica is not just another cruise. It’s one of the last truly wild places left on earth. And if it’s still sitting quietly on your bucket list? Bump it higher. ❤️🐧🧭
3. Wellness Corner — The Small Details That Change How You Feel ❤️ One of the things I love most about river cruising is the feeling. Not the checklist. Not the “must-see” attractions. Not rushing from place to place. The feeling. The quiet morning light over the Danube. A cappuccino as castles drift by on the Rhine. A glass of wine while vineyards roll past your balcony in Burgundy. The deep exhale that happens when you finally slow down enough to simply be somewhere. And interestingly, sometimes the smallest design details onboard can completely shape that feeling. At the River Cruise Expo in Europe this spring, I was touring the beautiful Emerald Luna and reflecting on how differently river cruise ships are designed today. Many newer ships now feature what’s called an “open-air balcony” — where the top half of a floor-to-ceiling window lowers down instead of having a traditional step-out balcony. Some travellers absolutely love this style. But it reminded me of something important: wellness travel is deeply personal. For me, wellness often looks like: ✨ sitting quietly with coffee in hand ✨ watching the scenery drift past ✨ feeling fresh air on my
face ✨ slowing down enough to savour the moment And at 5’4”, I realized that on some ships, the divider where the window lowers sits almost exactly at my seated eye level. Which meant that to fully enjoy the panoramic view… I actually had to stand up. 😂 Now, for some travellers, this won’t matter at all. But for others, it completely changes the onboard experience. And that’s
why I always say: the best river cruise is not simply the most famous ship or the most popular itinerary. It’s the one that fits you. Your travel style. Your pace. Your version of relaxation. Your mental picture of what “return on life” actually looks like. Because wellness in travel is often found in the details: ❤️ natural light ❤️ quiet spaces ❤️ comfort ❤️ ease ❤️ scenery ❤️ thoughtful design ❤️ moments that help you slow down and reconnect After touring ships all across Europe, I can
confidently say: the same river can feel like a completely different experience depending on the ship you choose. And sometimes, the difference between a good cruise and a truly restorative one is as simple as where you sip your morning coffee while Europe glides by outside your window. 🍷🚢

5. Client Spotlight: From
First River Cruise… to Booking the Next One Before Returning Home One of the things I love most about river
cruising is how often a first sailing turns into a second… before clients have even unpacked. Peter and his wife were referred to me directly by AmaWaterways when they began researching a Danube river cruise. Like many travellers, they wanted guidance on the differences between ships, cabins, itineraries, air options, and what truly makes one
river cruise experience different from another. After helping them plan their journey through Vienna, Budapest, and the Danube, they returned home already excited about where to sail next — and we’ve now booked their next AmaWaterways river cruise for 2027 as well. As many of you saw from my recent posts from the River Cruise Expo in Europe, I spend a great deal of time onboard these ships personally — walking the cabins, comparing layouts, experiencing the food, and meeting with cruise line executives and cruise managers directly — so I can match clients to the right experience, not just the most advertised one. Here’s what Peter shared after returning home: “What a pleasure to deal with Sheila. She is so knowledgeable, pleasant and very responsive. We did not know Sheila but AMA Waterways referred her when we contacted AMA about booking a river cruise on the Danube. Sheila
did a fantastic job in explaining every detail and arranging everything for us. Since returning the other week, we have booked another AMA River cruise with Sheila for next year. She was able to secure an amazing deal for us. Highly recommend Sheila!” — Provo Pete, travelled April 2026
There’s nothing better than
helping clients fall in love with river cruising — and then helping them decide which river to explore next. ❤️
