Take The Trip With Your Mom ❤️
Mother's Day was earlier this month. Father's Day is just around the corner. And as I sat down to write this week's newsletter, I found myself thinking about one of the most important trips I've ever taken. Not Antarctica. Not Africa. Not
Australia. A cruise with my mom. Just the two of us.
Twelve years ago, my kids were only 8 and 14. Leaving them at home for a week felt like a huge deal. And there were a
hundred reasons not to go. We were raising kids, paying for private school, juggling bills, and I was still building my travel business after leaving a successful career in financial risk management. The timing wasn't perfect. The money wasn't abundant. Life was busy.
But my mom had lost the love of her life—my dad—four years earlier. And around that same time, I had donated a gift
card to a charity auction investment that had gone spectacularly wrong. I could have focused on the money I'd lost and written it off as an expensive lesson. Instead, I used the gift card, paid the difference, and invested in something far more valuable: A week with my mom.
Twelve years later, I don't remember what the trip cost. I remember the laughter. The conversations. The quiet moments together. The memories. And it remains one of the best returns on life I've ever received. ❤️
What makes that trip even more meaningful is that it was the only trip the two of us ever took alone together. We promised we'd do it again. But life happened. Responsibilities piled up. Work got busy. And somehow, "someday" never came.
Thursday marked four years since my mom passed away. And if I'm honest, I don't spend much time thinking about the
trip we took. I think about the trips we didn't. The memories we never made. The stories we never got to share.
One of the reasons I love travel so much is that it gives us something increasingly rare in today's world: Time. Uninterrupted time together. Time for conversations that don't happen over rushed dinners. Time to laugh. Time to reconnect. Time to create stories that become family legends. Later in this newsletter, I share a story about returning to Colombia—a country I first explored with my daughter Ciara twelve years ago.
Those memories remain just as vivid today as the destinations themselves. Because when we look back, it's rarely the hotel room or the flight details we remember. It's who we shared the
experience with. So if you've been thinking about taking a trip with your mom, your dad, your spouse, your child, your sibling, or your best friend, consider this your sign. Go now. Not when work settles down. Not when life gets less busy. Not when the timing is perfect. Because it never will be. The perfect time is while they're still here. Or, as my dad used to say: "While they're still on the right side of the sod." ❤️ As a former actuary, I spent years helping organizations manage financial risk. Today, I help people maximize something even more valuable: Their return on life. And one thing I've learned is that the trips
we regret are rarely the ones we took. They're the ones we kept postponing. So this Father's Day season, ask yourself: Who is the person you've always wanted to travel with? And what memory could you create together this year? Because someday is not a date on the calendar. And the best time to make the memory is before it becomes one you wish you'd made.

1. River Cruise Corner — Why Colombia May Be River Cruising's Most Exciting New DestinationAbout 12 years ago, my daughter Ciara and I travelled through Colombia together.
We explored Bogotá's fascinating history, wandered the colourful streets of Cartagena, and experienced the remarkable energy and transformation of Medellín.
It was one of those trips that stayed with me long after I returned home.
The warmth of the people. The vibrant music. The incredible food. The colourful architecture. The sense of optimism and reinvention that seemed to be everywhere.
Now, more than a decade later, I'm preparing to return. But this time, I'll be seeing Colombia from a completely different perspective — aboard one of AmaWaterways' brand-new Magdalena River
cruises.
As a river cruise specialist, one of the things I love most about river cruising is how it allows you to experience a destination differently. You're not simply visiting a place;
you're travelling through the heart of it. And Colombia may be one of the most exciting new additions to the river cruise world in years. When most people think of river cruising, they
immediately picture the Rhine, Danube, Seine, or Douro. But the future of river cruising is expanding well beyond Europe. The Magdalena River offers something entirely different: 🎶 Vibrant music and dance traditions 🎨 Colourful colonial towns 🍽️ Exceptional cuisine 📖 Rich history and culture 🦜 Wildlife and natural
beauty ❤️ Meaningful connections with local communities From everything I've seen and heard so far, this feels less like a traditional European river cruise and more like a cultural immersion through the heart of Colombia. What excites me most is that I'll be returning to a destination I already love, but seeing it through entirely new eyes. That's one of travel's greatest gifts. Returning years later often reveals just how much you've changed as a traveller — and how much a destination has evolved as well. And if Colombia has been on your radar, there are currently some particularly attractive offers available through
AmaWaterways. On select departures, AmaWaterways is offering: ✨ Complimentary airfare from Toronto or Montreal ✨ Connector flights from other Canadian gateways for approximately C$300 per person ✨ Complimentary land packages on select sailings Combined with the launch of an entirely new destination, it's one of the strongest values I've seen from AmaWaterways in quite some time. Whether you're considering your first river cruise or your fifth, Colombia offers something refreshingly different from Europe's classic rivers. New cultures. New flavours. New perspectives. And sometimes those are exactly the journeys that create the most memorable stories. I'll be sailing the Magdalena River later this year, and I can't wait to share the experience with you.

2. Adventure Travel — Why Rocky Mountaineer Is More Than a Train Ride
There are some journeys where the destination is the highlight. And then there are journeys where the trip itself becomes the experience. After spending two days aboard Rocky Mountaineer travelling from Vancouver through Kamloops and onward into the Canadian Rockies toward Banff, I was reminded why luxury train travel has such a devoted following. It begins with the little
things. The gentle rhythm of the rails. The clickety-clack of the tracks beneath you. The wind in your hair as you stand in the open-air vestibule watching Canada unfold around you. And then there are the views. On Day 1, the
landscapes are beautiful. Forests, rivers, and rolling countryside drift by your window as you settle into the pace of the journey. By Day 2, however, the Canadian Rockies begin to take centre stage. Towering peaks rise dramatically in the distance. Rivers carve their way through deep valleys. Dense forests blanket the mountainsides. Around every bend is another postcard-worthy scene. What makes Rocky Mountaineer so special is that you don't have to focus on driving, directions, traffic, or logistics. You simply sit back and watch one of the world's great landscapes come to you.
Of course, the experience is elevated by exceptional service and outstanding cuisine. One morning, I found myself facing a difficult decision between five tempting breakfast options before finally settling on Eggs Benedict while the scenery rolled by outside my window. But some of my favourite moments weren't the meals. They were the quiet moments. Standing outside in the
vestibule. Listening to the train. Feeling the breeze. Watching the mountains emerge on the horizon. The moments where everyone onboard gradually stops talking and simply stares out the window in awe. As a luxury travel advisor, I've been fortunate to experience extraordinary journeys around the world—from river cruises in Europe to expedition cruises in Antarctica. Yet Rocky Mountaineer remains one of my favourite ways to experience Western Canada. Because sometimes luxury isn't about getting somewhere faster. It's about slowing down enough to truly see where you are. And few journeys showcase the beauty of Canada quite like this one.

3. Wellness Corner — The Power of Awe Our private guide started counting: “1… 2… 2.5… quarter to 3… 3…” And then we opened them. No picture prepares you for this moment. The Taj Mahal doesn’t just look beautiful. It feels overwhelming. Emotional. Surreal. You spend your whole life seeing it in books, movies, documentaries… And then suddenly you’re standing in front of it with someone you love. Watching Ciara’s face light up was honestly one of my favourite travel moments ever. Some trips are vacations. Some become core memories. Have you ever seen the Taj Mahal in
person? Taj Mahal, India One of the world’s greatest monuments to love

Our recent stay in Montreal at Le Mount Stephen was as we expected: excellent." — Jdh One of the questions I hear most often is: "How do I know which hotel is actually worth booking?" Because the right hotel isn't just a place to sleep. It's part of the experience. Where to in 2026? ✈️🌍Budapest. Paris. Antarctica. Tahiti. The Galápagos. A river cruise through Europe. An expedition to the ends of the earth. These aren't just destinations to me. They're experiences carefully matched to the people taking them. The best trip isn't always the most expensive. The most famous cruise line isn't always the right fit. And the perfect journey looks different for every traveller. That's why I spend so much time onboard ships, at the
River Cruise Expo in Europe, touring expedition vessels, meeting with cruise line executives, and experiencing destinations firsthand—so I can help you find the journey that's perfect for you. So tell me... if you could go anywhere in 2026, where would it be? ❤️
