Take The Trip With Your Mom ❤️
Don't Let the Headlines Stop You From Taking the Trip ❤️ You've probably been seeing them. Stories about record jet fuel prices, tensions in the Middle East, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, and warnings from European officials about potential fuel shortages affecting aviation this summer. It's a lot. And if you have a trip
planned — or you've been thinking about finally booking one — I completely understand why those headlines might give you pause. So let me share something that caught my eye this week. Air Canada
took the unusual step of emailing its entire customer base directly — a message titled "We've got you covered" — with a clear, unambiguous statement: "There is no fuel shortage affecting our operations, including across Europe, and we do not anticipate any significant impact through the summer." Mark Galardo, Air Canada's Executive Vice
President and Chief Commercial Officer, confirmed that while global fuel markets remain dynamic, Air Canada has a diversified and sophisticated fuel supply in place — and the airline fully expects to operate its complete summer schedule. (See CBC National story above, and https://openjaw.com/newsroom/airline/2026/06/02/air-canada-sets-the-record-straight-there-is-no-fuel-shortage .) That's the kind of proactive, direct communication I respect. And it matters. But here's what I really want to talk about.
The Headlines Rarely Tell the Whole Story In nearly twenty years as a travel advisor, I've watched clients worry about fuel prices, airline strikes, political events, currency fluctuations,
economic uncertainty, and health concerns. Every single year, there's a reason the headlines suggest it might not be the right time to travel. And every single year, the people who waited for
the "perfect" moment found that it never quite arrived. Meanwhile, the people who took the trip came home with memories that redefined what a good year looked like. I say this not to minimize
what's happening in the world — the situation in the Middle East is real, and global fuel markets are genuinely unsettled right now. But my job — like my old job as an actuary — is to help you understand actual risk versus perceived risk. The actual risk of your summer plans being derailed right now? Based on what Air Canada confirmed this week,
it's considerably lower than the headlines would suggest. The risk of waiting another year, and then another? That one I take more seriously.
What You Can Control As an actuary, I
spent two decades helping people manage financial risk. Today, I help people maximize their Return on Life. And one of the truest things I've learned is that time is a non-renewable asset. The perfect year doesn't arrive on its own. It's created. What you can do right now is focus on what's within your control: ✔️ Working with reputable airlines and cruise lines with proven operational resilience ✔️ Purchasing comprehensive travel insurance — always, but especially now ✔️ Booking through suppliers with strong track records and diversified operations ✔️ Having an experienced travel advisor monitoring developments on your behalf — and advocating for you if anything shifts That last one matters more than
people realize. I'm watching this situation closely, staying in contact with my supplier partners, and I'll reach out to any client whose plans may be affected before they even have to ask. That's what an advisor does. That's something Google can't do for you.
And Speaking of the Right Time to Book... If you've been considering a luxury cruise, this month offers one of the best opportunities I've seen recently. For June, I have
exclusive access to a Direct Travel private sale with Oceania Cruises — one of my favourite small-ship luxury lines. Clients can receive an additional 5% savings on all published Oceania voyages, combinable with many current promotions, across all cabin categories. It applies to Europe, Alaska, Asia, the South Pacific, Africa, South America, and world cruise itineraries — including Oceania's newly launching 2028 and 2029 sailings. Oceania has built its reputation on exceptional cuisine, destination-rich itineraries, and elegant ships that attract travellers who value enrichment over spectacle. If
that sounds like you, this is the moment.
Sometimes the headlines tell us to wait. The best travel experiences remind us why we shouldn't. ❤️ If there's a destination you've been turning over in your mind — a river cruise through Europe, an expedition to Antarctica, an Oceania voyage somewhere extraordinary — perhaps this is the nudge you needed. Your Return on Life isn't waiting for the perfect headline. And neither should you. Ready to talk through your options? Reply to this email and let's start planning. #AskSheila

corner of the world be? Let’s find out together.
1. River Cruise Corner — The river is the same. The experience is anything but.One of the questions I hear most often — and I mean most often — is: "Sheila, which river cruise line is the best?" My honest answer is always the same: it depends. And I know that sounds like a dodge, but stay with me. Let me give you a concrete example. Take two Rhône River itineraries through Provence. Viking and Uniworld visit many of the same ports — the same beautiful French villages, the same vineyards, the same sun-drenched Provençal countryside, the same extraordinary cuisine. On paper, they look almost interchangeable. They are not
interchangeable. Viking is built around elegant Scandinavian design, understated sophistication, and deep destination immersion. The ships are calm, uncluttered, quietly beautiful. The experience is designed to feel effortless. Uniworld is something else entirely — a floating boutique hotel, with richly layered interiors, highly personalized service, and a level of attention to detail that makes you feel like a guest in someone's extraordinarily well-appointed home. One is not better than the other. But one may be significantly
better for you. Watch facebook reel here of "Sur le pont d'Avignon" https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1CZrvwv4gy/
This is exactly why I invest the way I do in firsthand knowledge. I've personally sailed 15 river cruises across AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Viking, Avalon, Tauck, Scenic, and others. I've attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Vienna in 2025 and again in Amsterdam in 2026 — two consecutive years, touring more than 30 ships, and sitting down with cruise
line owners, CEOs, and senior executives to understand how each brand actually thinks about the guest experience. In Amsterdam this past spring, I sat with AmaWaterways co-founder Kristin Karst aboard the AmaSofia and was briefed personally on their newest emerging destination — Colombia's Magdalena River. I don't do this to collect stamps. I do
it because a brochure will always make every ship look extraordinary. And many of them are. But brochures can't tell you that one line's idea of a "included excursion" is a guided walk while another's is a private wine tasting with a fifth-generation vigneron. They can't tell you which ship's cabins feel genuinely spacious and which feel generous only in the photography. What I've learned after nearly 20 years, three consecutive years as a Virtuoso Cruise Icon in the top 1% of cruise advisors worldwide, and more river miles than I can count: the best river cruise is not the most expensive one, the most advertised one, or even the most acclaimed one. It's the one that fits you —
your pace, your priorities, your idea of a perfect day on the water. The Rhône doesn't change. The lavender fields don't move. The light over Avignon is the same light it's always been. But how
you experience all of it? That depends entirely on which ship you're standing on when you see it. So I'll ask you: if you were choosing a Rhône River cruise through Provence, would you be drawn to Viking's quiet elegance — or Uniworld's boutique richness?

2. Adventure Travel — The Galápagos Teaches You Something Important
One of the things I love most about expedition cruising is what it does to your sense of perspective — quietly, almost without you noticing. Most travel experiences are designed around us. Our schedules. Our preferences. Our timelines. The Galápagos Islands are different. Out there, the wildlife makes the rules. If a sea lion has claimed the beach as its afternoon nap spot, you wait. If a giant tortoise is making its unhurried way across the path, everyone stops. If a magnificent frigatebird begins its spectacular courtship display overhead, the entire group happily forgets
whatever else they were doing. And honestly? That's exactly as it should be. During my time in the Galápagos, I found myself surrounded by some of the most extraordinary wildlife on the
planet: 🐢 Galápagos Giant Tortoises 🦭 Galápagos Sea Lions 🐦 Blue-Footed, Red-Footed and Nazca Boobies ❤️ Magnificent Frigatebirds 🦎 Marine Iguanas 🦩 Flamingos Every landing felt like
stepping into a living nature documentary. And speaking of landings — one of the most memorable parts of exploring the Galápagos is something called a wet landing. Instead of
docking at a pier, your Zodiac pulls right up to shore and you step directly into the water before heading off to explore. The first time you do it, it feels a little adventurous. The second time, you realize it's simply part of the experience. Because expedition cruising isn't about observing from behind the glass. It's about getting out there. Walking where the wildlife lives. Experiencing destinations as they genuinely are. Of course, wet landings look different depending on where you're travelling. In the Galápagos, water shoes or sandals are all you need. When I sailed to Antarctica aboard the National
Geographic Endurance with Lindblad Expeditions, we had insulated muck boots and full waterproof gear — the Drake Passage does not negotiate. But whether you're stepping ashore among penguin colonies in Antarctica, exploring remote Arctic beaches, or watching a marine iguana sunbathe in the Galápagos, the Zodiac is often where the real adventure begins. As someone who specializes in expedition travel, these are the experiences I love helping clients find. The Galápagos isn't about checking sights off a list. It's about slowing down, paying attention, and remembering — perhaps for the first time in a long time — that we are guests in a natural world that doesn't revolve around
us. For a few days, everything operates exactly as it should. The wildlife makes the rules. And we are genuinely privileged to be there. ❤️
Curious about expedition cruising — the Galápagos, Antarctica, the Arctic, or somewhere else that changes how you see the world? Reply to this email and let's talk about which expedition is the right fit for you. #AskSheila
3. Wellness Corner — Wellness Travel Has Changed — And I Think That's a Good Thing ❤️ I came across a fascinating BBC Travel piece recently — The Evolution of the Wellness Retreat — that put words to something I've been watching happen in real time with my clients. If you'd like to read it, I'll link it below. But I wanted to share my own take, because after nearly 20 years designing journeys for discerning travellers, this evolution feels deeply personal to me. For a long time, wellness travel meant a massage, a facial, a yoga class, and perhaps a cucumber-infused glass of water beside a beautiful pool. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Some of my best afternoons have involved exactly that combination. But wellness travel has grown up. And I think it's better for it. Today, the most thoughtful retreats are doing something more ambitious. They're combining gorgeous settings with
science-backed health assessments, personalized fitness programs, nutrition coaching, sleep optimization, and preventative health strategies — giving guests tools they can actually take home. Not just a week of indulgence, but a week that genuinely changes how you feel for months afterward. As someone who spent two decades as an actuary
modelling long-term outcomes, I find this direction fascinating. Because the question I kept coming back to in those years was never just how long — it was always how well. What good is longevity if you're not living the life you want? That's still the question I ask when I design journeys for my clients. And here's what I find equally interesting: alongside the rise of longevity clinics and diagnostic retreats, there's a quieter countertrend. Some travellers are craving something simpler. Time in nature. Forest bathing. Hiking trails with no Wi-Fi. Sauna rituals on the edge of a fjord. A river cruise through Burgundy where someone else handles every detail and you finally — finally — have space to breathe. Both are wellness. Both are valid. The evolution isn't toward one definition. It's toward your definition. I've always believed that travel itself is one of the most powerful wellness investments we make. Not because it fixes everything. But because it creates space that daily life rarely allows. Some of my most genuinely
restorative moments have had nothing to do with a spa. Standing in Antarctica in November 2024, watching a leopard seal glide beneath the ice in that extraordinary soft polar light — that was stillness in a way I hadn't experienced in years. Cycling through vineyards along the Rhône. Walking beside the Seine in the early morning before Normandy. Standing quietly in nature with no notifications pulling me away. In 2022, I won Virtuoso's Luminaries, Legends & Leaders Award in the Wellness Category — and I'll tell you honestly, what I was most proud of wasn't the award itself. It was the 80-plus "Travel Tuesdays" Zoom sessions I'd run with clients during the pandemic, helping people hold onto their sense of possibility when the world had gone very small. That was wellness travel, even when we couldn't go anywhere. The real evolution, as I see it, is this: wellness travel is no longer just about pampering ourselves. It's about returning home more rested, more present, more energized, and more connected to the life we actually want to be living. And if that doesn't sound like maximizing your Return on Life, I don't know what does. ❤️ Curious what a wellness-focused journey might look like for you — whether that's a river cruise through the heart of Europe, an expedition to somewhere that resets your perspective entirely, or a boutique retreat
designed around your goals? I'd love to help you design it. Just #AskSheila. 🔗 BBC Travel: The Evolution of the
